Smoking, weight gain and diabetes type 2 risk
A study that has recently made headlines, has found some evidence that quitting smoking might increase the short-term diabetes risk. This increase in risk is believed to be due to weight gain often associated with quitting smoking. When accounting for weight gain, the increased risk was almost nonexistent.
Although this study has been misused as a pro-smoking argument, smoking is still considered a number one killer, alongside obesity, and although for unknown reasons can increase the risk of getting diabetes. The researchers point out that quitting smoking is still the best thing to do, but that this study highlights the importance of weight stability after quitting smoking.
