Climbing accident rescue mission

June 23, 2010 By: Iris Daniela Classon Category: Iris' blog

Sunday morning I woke up by very disturbing phone call from my mum. She had gone hiking and decided to do some freestyle climbing without her climbing gear. Quite high up the mountain wall she must have torn some muscle fibres and gotten a severe muscle inflammation and lost her grip. As she slid down the wall she tried desperate to grab onto anything as she would never make the fall if she didn’t. She managed to slide down to a very narrow shelf but was badly scratched up and was experiencing cramps in both her leg and arm, she was now stuck. She didn’t want to call the police and be rescued by an emergency helicopter so I packed her climbing gear and drove up to the mountains with dad and my husband ready to belay her down. It was a long drive and we had to hike an hour and an half to make it there. Halfway through our rescue mission we received the good news that she had managed to climb down after the cramps in her foot had stopped and she even kicked of her hiking boots to get a better grip with her toes. When we found her she was in the lake washing of the blood, and in fairly good spirit. Insane. A word that describes my life, me and my family. Mum loves extreme sports, and climbing is one of her many passions, but this accident scared me. If she hadn’t managed to land on a shelf, or if there hadn’t been one there at all she would have broken her back or neck, or died. I am dreading the day I will receive that phone call, and I hope it never comes. I am quite angry with her for not using her climbing gear, as a climbing instructor she should know better. And also as my mum

Not Romanian food for dinner again!

June 16, 2010 By: Iris Daniela Classon Category: Iris' blog

Oh my. If you read my blog often then you know how I feel about Romanian food, and that every time I come home it is the same discussion over and over again about the shopping and cooking. This time I have been cooking my own food, as I dislike Romanian food, and got ill last time I was at home after eating shit loads of it against my will. Yesterday however we had friends over, and I decided to behave and not make such a fuss about the food. The dinner can be best described as: large amounts of fat, a lot of meat and refined carbohydrates. Everything, including the bread, was dripping of fat/oil, except for the steamed vegetables I suspect was made to shut me up he he. If you ever go to Romania you will notice that fat and sugar are the two most used ingredients, and all carbohydrate sources are refined to the point that they just scream hemorrhoids (yes, a diet low in fiber will give you problems such as small little friends called ‘Hermes’. I only ate a little; I am not a big fan of bingeing on social occasions (or ever). Afterwards I went to the gym, and felt like a million bucks after a 2 hour workout ( 1 hour dancing).

Back to Crazy, it’s show time people!

June 13, 2010 By: Iris Daniela Classon Category: Iris' blog

After a lovely holiday in Alicante it is back to the nightclub madness at the Crazy Piano for me. This time I will be around for most of the summer, which makes it more fun as I get to be with the girls more. This summer I expect a lot of dancing at the Crazy Piano, and I hope and believe that we will put on some very good shows for the audience. I joined up the regional gym, paying a whopping 60 Euros a month – but considering the fact that I will be using the gym every day it will be worth it. Beach 2010 is still on, even if the weather here is shit and there is no chance of showing of the results on the beach. Oh well, the clothing at the club is maybe just as skimpy so at least I can be certain that nothing jiggles, unless I want it to haha. This is me with Noemi last night, one of my favorite girls and one hell of a dancer, and she is also very very fit. Girl power!

Holiday in Alicante II

June 10, 2010 By: Iris Daniela Classon Category: Iris' blog

Good bye Alicante! The journey can best be described in one word, sweaty! The other day I went for a run in Alicante. And running in 33 C without a single cloud on the sky or any water was a sweaty affair! Following the 40 min run I was still sweating like crazy for another hour. Apart from the heat Alicante is a perfect place to run. Yesterday I went to one hell of a gym. VirginActive has a truly awesome spa-gym that has EVERYTHING you need. It has a spa, pool, Turkish bath, pilates (real pilates), martial arts area, weights, machines, classes, vibrating machines (!) and everything else a gym needs. What it does lack are girls/ women. I believe that I was the only woman in the weightlifting area. I was again wearing my fav pink hot pants and a short black top (as the gym was humid and hot) and did my very best to show off my Scandinavian built muscles. I do believe that I have presented Norway/Sweden very well in the female weightlifting category! The gym gets five stars from me, and I am sad to leave :( . I managed to keep up my training, having only one day of, and walked over 17000 steps a day. The food on the other hand, was 60% good – the part we ate at the hotel (bought at a nearby grocery store). The food served at restaurants (and we did look up over 30 restaurants) is awful. Just fast food and even the ‘tapas’ are deep fried. I am now looking forward to cook again, and oh boy am I going to eat a lot of veggies when I get home!

Holiday in Alicante

June 06, 2010 By: Iris Daniela Classon Category: Iris' blog

Hello Alicante! It is my third day in wonderful Alicante with mum and grandma. The Friday after the graduation we took a late noon flight for six days with sun and 30+ degrees. I can’t complain! Mum found a reasonable priced hotel room at a four star hotel just a short walk to the beach and the city centre. We have spent the days walking around (an average of 18 000 steps a day!), laying on the beach (not so much at the pool) and dancing a good three hours last night to Spanish music. My big challenge as a newly born dietitian is the crap here that they call food. Everything is fast food, greasy, tasteless, pricey (!!) and there is not a single vegetable or fiber containing item in sight. I/we solved this by going to a supermarket and buy a bowl, cup and spoon, and bran sticks, milk and fruit. I also bought pumpernickel bread for me, and yummy tuna in tomato paste and some noodles as an emergency for those late night cravings instead of fries on the way home. Some super-spicy chilly gets to go on everything. And of course carrots and some other veggies too. I figured out I ought to get about 22 grams of fiber a day minimum eating my own breakfast and lunch/night meal and also save 20 Euros a day. It’s a win-win for me :) . I wonder what the room attendant thinks of us, considering that we have filled the fridge until its bursting point he he.

I am now officially a dietitian

Yesterday was my big day, my graduation. The last month has gone by so fast, and my graduation as well. It was a full day, starting with a lovely breakfast with the girls (my classmates). I was so excited that I barely could eat anything, but after the ceremony we (mum, dad, grandma x2 , my mother-in-law, sister-in-law and my husband Daniel) ate a late lunch on Avenyen (the main street in Gothenburg). In the evening we had a barbeque, provided by Eva (Daniels mum)- and it was delicious. And that is how the day I finally became a dietitian was celebrated. In perfect weather, clear blue sky, 23 degrees and with people I care deeply about. I will add more pictures later, but for now here is my ‘grad-photo’….

Saying goodbye to the dietitians at the geriatric ward

June 02, 2010 By: Iris Daniela Classon Category: Iris' blog

This Monday it was time to say goodbye to the lovely ladies at the geriatric ward. I brought with me a plate with five different gourmet cheeses, grapes, crackers, alcohol free red wine and cider. Sandra baked a delicious cake and brewed some coffee. I had also with me a gift for each and one of my four mentors. I had drawn a ‘Ann the dietitian’ single panel comic strip, dedicated to them. I will post these ones on the website later this week. They got a piece each of a four piece puzzle, to symbolize how they together completed the picture and that it wouldn’t have been the same if one of them hadn’t been there. They surprised me with a beautiful flower, which nearly brought tears to my eyes when I read the card: Congratulations with your graduation. The best wishes for the future, from your colleagues at the geriatric ward’. I have to say that the women working there are awesome, a truly heartwarming bunch of intelligent and fun women. I had a really good time, and I am sad to say goodbye, for now at least…
